Interview: Duitse zanger Malik Harris (Bekend van het nationale songfestival in Duitsland)

Dit keer niemand minder dan zanger Malik Harris uit Duitsland!

We kennen Malik allemaal kennen van het nationale songfestival in Duitsland, waar hij dit jaar aan meedoet met het nummer ´Rockstars´.

Ik vind het een hele eer dat Malik wat tijd vrij kon maken voor een paar vragen!

This time none other than singer Malik Harris from Germany!

We all know Malik from the national song contest in Germany, where he is competing this year with the song ´Rockstars´.

I'm honored that Malik could make some time for a few questions!

The Interview:

1. I'm from The Netherlands, and here we don't know you very well yet. Can you briefly tell us who you are and what you do? Sure! My name is Malik Harris, I’m a 24-year-old German-American musician currently based near Munich, Germany. 2. I know you from the National Song Contest of Germany where you are participating with the song 'Rockstars' First real question: Where did the inspiration came from to do something in the music industry? I grew up in a super musical family - my grandfather in the US was a successful opera singer, my grandmother in Germany a pianist and my father can play various instruments, plus my whole family has always had a great taste of music, so I grew up with amazing music playing at home all the time. One day I just started singing along and realized how much fun I had experiencing my voice which led me to buy my first acoustic guitar and start playing cover songs at the age of 13. 3. How did your career start? I spent a lot of time playing at small bars and birthday parties in my home town. One day, while playing in front of about 10 people in one of those small bars, I was filmed by Marie, who sent the tape to her friend Robin, who owns a recording studio in Munich and invited me there right away, telling me that if I work hard he could imagine me having a big music journey ahead of me - so I immediately started sleeping in the studio and basically never left it anymore. And today Robin is my manager, producer and music video director.

4. Who are your big examples or inspirations? Oh there are a lot. Twenty One Pilots definitely inspired me to make music and write my own songs, but I’m also a huge Michael Jackson fan, as well as Queen, NF, Eminem, Alicia Keys, Sia, Macklemore, Imagine Dragons.. the list goes on and on :D 5. Returning to the National Song Contest: How did you get there? A few weeks after I wrote ´Rockstars‘ Robin came up to me and asked if the Eurovision Song Contest was something I might be interested in. I immediately thought about the song and how great I think it would be to perform this particular song on the massive Eurovision stage because it’s such a personal and vulnerable song and I feel like there are a lot of people who can relate to the lyrics of the song and who can derive some form of support through it, and that has always been something I want to do with my music. Also, ‚Rockstars‘ is so different than any other song I’ve ever heard Germany send to the Eurovision song contest, so I was like: why not go for something new? :D 6. What did this period look like for you and what have you learn? I’m totally enjoying it. I’m just super happy to get the chance to play such a personal song and reach some new people and I’m also really looking forward to finally be standing on a huge stage again. I learned once again how much joy and happiness a can derive from music and how important music is in my life.

7. Who did you see as your biggest competitor and why? I really like ´I swear to god‘ by Mael & Jonas and ´Anxiety‘ by Felicia Lu, those are the two songs I enjoy the most but to be honest, I don’t really feel like we’re ‚competing‘ but rather that we all have a great chance in front of us and whoever gets to go to Turin will have the support of all the others.

8. You are participating with the song 'Rockstars' What is the song about? Can you tell that in brief? I’ll do my best to be brief :D I wrote ‚Rockstars‘ after watching an episode of ’The Office’ and hearing this quote: I wish there was a way to know you’re in the Good Old Days - before you’ve actually left them.’ That moment was so intense for me, I immediately started crying and also writing this song, It’s about the ‚Good Old Days‘ of my childhood and youth, those lighthearted, mindless times when being happy was so easy and how we all somehow leave those times behind at a certain point and get caught up in thoughts, doubts, our everyday lives and so on and so on. I’m also trying to remind all of us through this song that we should stop always looking for the good old days in the past, but rather try to find them in the present, because they actually never really stop, we just have to change the way we’re looking for them.

9. Do you plan to participate in the National Song Contest again someday? It depends on how this one works out.. :D 10. You have released several songs. Which song are you most proud of and why? It’s actually ´Rockstars‘ because I’ve never written such a vulnerable song that I was actually scared of releasing since it really lets people take a very good look at how I feel inside, with no filter whatsoever. So I’m proud that I managed to write such a personal song and I’m also proud that I went on and released it into the world.

11. Where would you still like to perform and why? In Lower Hutt, New Zealand. I mentioned this place in my very first single ´Say The Name‘ which is about my dream to play my music all over the world. Lower Hutt is precisely on the other side of the world from where I live and grew up, so if I ever play a show there I know that I made my dream come true.

12. Do you have any other passions besides making music? If so, which ones? Not really.. I love playing soccer, but honestly most of the day I just make music. :) 13. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Hopefully on a huge stage in Lower Hutt as part of my world tour. 14. Do you have any tips for new artists? (Like me, haha!) Haha sure thing! What I always tell aspiring artists is to GO OUT. Go out there and share your music - no matter where or when - I myself started playing in tiny bars in front of like two people who were more interested in their beers than my music. But still, that is a part of my journey and without it, I might have never gotten the chance to be ‚discovered‘ and one day play on stages in front of thousands of people. So no matter how small or irrelevant your first little shows might seem, as long as you go out there and play your music, you will get your chance. :)

Het Interview:

1. Ik kom uit Nederland, en hier kennen we je nog niet zo goed. Kun je ons in het kort vertellen wie je bent en wat je doet?

Zeker! Mijn naam is Malik Harris, ik ben een 24-jarige Duits-Amerikaanse muzikant die momenteel gevestigd is in de buurt van München, Duitsland.

2. Ik ken je van het Nationaal Songfestival van Duitsland waar je meedoet met het liedje 'Rockstars'

Eerste echte vraag: Waar kwam de inspiratie vandaan om iets in de muziekindustrie te gaan doen?

Ik ben opgegroeid in een super muzikale familie - mijn grootvader in de VS was een succesvolle operazanger, mijn grootmoeder in Duitsland een pianiste en mijn vader kan verschillende instrumenten bespelen, plus mijn hele familie heeft altijd een geweldige smaak voor muziek gehad, dus ik groeide op met geweldige muziek die altijd thuis speelde. Op een dag begon ik gewoon mee te zingen en realiseerde ik me hoe leuk ik het vond om mijn stem te ervaren, wat ertoe leidde dat ik mijn eerste akoestische gitaar kocht en op 13-jarige leeftijd begon met het spelen van coversongs.

3. Hoe is je carrière begonnen?

Ik bracht veel tijd door met spelen in kleine bars en op verjaardagsfeestjes in mijn thuisstad. Op een dag, toen ik voor ongeveer 10 mensen in zo'n kleine bar speelde, werd ik gefilmd door Marie, die de tape naar haar vriend Robin stuurde, die eigenaar is van een opnamestudio in München en me daar meteen uitnodigde, en me vertelde dat als ik hard zou werken hij zich kon voorstellen dat ik een grote muziekreis voor me had - dus ik begon meteen in de studio te slapen en ben er eigenlijk nooit meer weggegaan. En vandaag is Robin mijn manager, producer en videoclip regisseur.

4. Wie zijn je grote voorbeelden of inspiratiebronnen?

Oh dat zijn er heel veel. Twenty One Pilots heeft me zeker geïnspireerd om muziek te maken en mijn eigen nummers te schrijven, maar ik ben ook een grote Michael Jackson fan, net als Queen, NF, Eminem, Alicia Keys, Sia, Macklemore, Imagine Dragons... de lijst gaat maar door :D

5. Terugkeren naar het Nationaal Songfestival: Hoe ben je daar gekomen?

Een paar weken nadat ik ´Rockstars´ had geschreven kwam Robin naar me toe en vroeg of het Eurovisie Songfestival iets was waarin ik geïnteresseerd zou kunnen zijn. Ik dacht meteen aan het liedje en hoe geweldig ik het zou vinden om dit liedje op het grote Eurovisie podium te brengen, omdat het zo'n persoonlijk en kwetsbaar liedje is en ik het gevoel heb dat er veel mensen zijn die zich kunnen identificeren met de tekst van het liedje en die er een vorm van steun uit kunnen putten, en dat is altijd iets geweest wat ik met mijn muziek wil doen. Bovendien is 'Rockstars' zo anders dan alle andere liedjes die ik Duitsland ooit naar het Eurovisiesongfestival heb horen sturen, dus ik had zoiets van: waarom niet voor iets nieuws gaan?

6. Hoe zag deze periode er voor jou uit en wat heb je geleerd?

Ik geniet er helemaal van. Ik ben gewoon superblij dat ik de kans krijg om zo'n persoonlijk nummer te spelen en nieuwe mensen te bereiken en ik kijk er ook echt naar uit om eindelijk weer eens op een groot podium te staan. Ik heb weer geleerd hoeveel vreugde en geluk je uit muziek kunt halen en hoe belangrijk muziek in mijn leven is.

7. Wie zag je als je grootste concurrent en waarom?

Ik hou echt van 'I swear to god' van Mael & Jonas en 'Anxiety' van Felicia Lu, dat zijn de twee nummers waar ik het meest van geniet, maar om eerlijk te zijn heb ik niet echt het gevoel dat we aan het 'concurreren' zijn, maar eerder dat we allemaal een grote kans voor ons hebben liggen en wie naar Turijn mag, zal de steun hebben van alle anderen.

8. Je doet mee met het nummer 'Rockstars' Waar gaat het nummer over? Kun je dat in het kort vertellen?

Ik zal mijn best doen om kort te zijn :D Ik schreef 'Rockstars' na het kijken van een aflevering van 'The Office' en het horen van deze quote: I wish there was a way to know you're in the Good Old Days - before you've actually left them.' Dat moment was zo intens voor mij, ik begon meteen te huilen en ook dit nummer te schrijven, Het gaat over de 'Good Old Days' van mijn kindertijd en jeugd, die luchtige, hersenloze tijden waarin gelukkig zijn zo makkelijk was en hoe we allemaal op de een of andere manier die tijden op een gegeven moment achter ons laten en verstrikt raken in gedachten, twijfels, ons dagelijks leven en ga zo maar door. Ik probeer ons er ook allemaal aan te herinneren door middel van dit lied dat we moeten stoppen met altijd te zoeken naar de goede oude tijd in het verleden, maar dat we ze eerder moeten proberen te vinden in het heden, omdat ze eigenlijk nooit echt ophouden, we moeten alleen de manier veranderen waarop we ernaar zoeken.

9. Ben je van plan om ooit nog eens deel te nemen aan het Nationaal Songfestival?

Dat hangt ervan af hoe deze keer zal uitpakken... :D

10. Je hebt verschillende liedjes uitgebracht. Op welk nummer ben je het meest trots en waarom?

Het is eigenlijk 'Rockstars' omdat ik nog nooit zo'n kwetsbaar nummer heb geschreven dat ik eigenlijk bang was om uit te brengen, omdat het mensen echt een heel goede kijk geeft op hoe ik me van binnen voel, zonder enige filter. Dus ik ben trots dat ik erin geslaagd ben om zo'n persoonlijk liedje te schrijven en ik ben ook trots dat ik het de wereld in heb geholpen.

11. Waar zou je nog willen optreden en waarom?

In Lower Hutt, Nieuw Zeeland. Ik noemde deze plaats in mijn allereerste single ´Say The Name´ die gaat over mijn droom om mijn muziek over de hele wereld te spelen. Lower Hutt is precies aan de andere kant van de wereld van waar ik woon en ben opgegroeid, dus als ik daar ooit een show speel weet ik dat ik mijn droom heb waargemaakt.

12. Heb je nog andere passies naast het maken van muziek? Zo ja, welke?

Niet echt... Ik hou van voetballen, maar eerlijk gezegd maak ik het grootste deel van de dag gewoon muziek. :)

13. Waar zie je jezelf over 5 jaar?

Hopelijk op een groot podium in Lower Hutt als onderdeel van mijn wereldtournee.

14. Heb je nog tips voor nieuwe artiesten? (Zoals ik, haha!)

Haha zeker weten! Wat ik altijd tegen aspirant-artiesten zeg is: GO OUT. Ga naar buiten en deel je muziek - het maakt niet uit waar of wanneer - ik ben zelf begonnen met spelen in kleine bars voor twee mensen die meer geïnteresseerd waren in hun biertjes dan in mijn muziek. Maar toch, dat is een deel van mijn reis en zonder dat, had ik misschien nooit de kans gekregen om 'ontdekt' te worden en op een dag op podia te spelen voor duizenden mensen. Dus het maakt niet uit hoe klein of irrelevant je eerste kleine optredens lijken, zolang je erheen gaat en je muziek speelt, krijg je je kans. :)

- Malik, nogmaals bedankt voor je tijd, ik waardeer het echt! Ik wens je veel succes in je toekomstige carrière en met alles wat je doet. Je hebt zeker mijn steun!
